![]() At one point he said "you'll see that as we gain elevation, the vegetation will change and you'll see different flowers and trees." Someone on the tour, who I believe was also frustrated and the lack of actual guiding, asked "what kind of vegetation will we see?" The answer was "trees that grow at higher elevations." Nothing more. On the ride up, our guide was pretty much silent. Trying to eat on the bus was challenging, too - see reference above about no overhead luggage bins. The food - at least my sandwich - was fine, but the market was dirty. The "deli" itself is a mini-market and it was NOT clean. Inside was a madhouse, and folks didn't know in which line to stand, and in the end it took more than 20 minutes for everyone to even get their food. He again parked, told us to be back in 20 minutes, and didn't explain anything. He told us this was our chance to get lunch, which we could eat on the bus or up at the park. Another C Big Islands bus was already there, and a third arrived before we left. On the way up to the Park, we stopped at a "deli" to pick up sandwiches. It might have been interesting if he told us why they're even called that. It was another, "go over there and be back here in 20 minutes. They were pretty, but the "guide" told us nothing about the park (how it came to be, how old, etc.) or what we'd be seeing. He didn't even explain how to actually reach the beach, or go down with us. Just stopped the bus and told us to be back in 20 minutes. The first stop at a black beach was underwhelming. Meet back over here, etc." He never pointed or clarified what he was talking about, or provided a landmark. I will be over there to take pictures for you. He had a maddening habit of saying "get off the bus and go over there. Our guide was not really a guide, but rather just the driver. Note: The seats are tight and there are no overhead bins, so you will have to put any bags, jackets, purchases on your laps, and you'll also have your lunch with you. They had at least three mini-buses going for our cruise, with each bus carrying the maximum of 24 passengers. There were a lot of people gathered in the line for C Big Tours when we disembarked, and they were disorganized in getting us lined up and then checked in. As we only had the one day in port, and based on good reviews here, we booked this tour, as they would pick us up and drop us off from the ship. ![]() We took C Big Islands "Volcanoes National Park and Waterfalls" tour when we visit Hilo on board NCL's Pride of America.
